"Co-ordinating Your Art", A Design Lecture!

Well hey y'all!
Whew, bit of a crazy week here.

Friday I had the honour of doing a design lecture for a group of ladies.
This meant I put on my Interior Design hat (that had been stuffed in a closet) and mixed my experience in Interior Design with my experience in art.

So, what did we talk about?

First we discussed color trends.
I put together 6 different design boards consisting of what I believe to be the freshest colors moving forward in design
Also while talking about these design boards, I showed how different paintings blended with different fabrics and colors

a) grey, beige, or greige?

b) mustard or deep gold (added with grey)

c) deep apricot

d) teal and turquoise is still good! Gravitating towards a deeper turquoise

e)  Grass green

John Deere -:) (hey, it looked great!)

We then discussed the importance of keeping things simple.
Like things that are expensive to change
i.e. counter tops, flooring, furniture staples.

This will give you the ability to add "pops" of color when you need a change.

For example in this room by my friend Dana Wolter.
When you tire of the gold pillows that's an easy fix.
Pop in deep apricot or grass green.

Then we discussed emotional art
These are examples of emotional art

What do I mean by emotional art?
Art that reminds you of something.
Maybe something in your past.
Something spiritual.
or even
Something you love to do.

Kendall Boggs

Something that makes you go "awe"!
or even cry!

I then wanted to discuss difficult spaces for art and how to work a collage.

over headboards

Mix antique paintings and pictures for added interest

or keep your collage art clean and simple using black and white photography

Finally, we discussed what to do with your children's photos.

A beautiful example of a terrific way to display pictures of your children.

"The Wind Beneath My Wings"

Yesterday was an extremely sad day for me.

This world lost one of the finest women I have ever had the honour of knowing.

Catherine Sollie

Mrs. Sollie was my very best, very, very special friend's mother from high school.
Becky left us about 7 years ago after battling cancer.

Now her sweet mom is celebrating with her in Heaven.

Let me tell you a little about "Cat" (that's what Bec would call her)

Cat was truly a saint.  And I don't say that lightly.
She was strong.  Not in a physical way (even though I think she was pretty physically strong as well)
She was uncharacteristically independent for a woman of that era.
(now that is my observation)
She never, ever needed for anything.
She was a giver, never a taker.
She lived her life doing for others.

I had a special bond with this woman.
You know how sometimes you know people and well, you know they love you and all, or maybe just like you, I don't know, that probably doesn't make much sense.
This woman LOVED me.
And I LOVED her.

She was a second mother to me.  When Bec wasn't around, she would just sit at their bar and talk to me.  She would listen (because I'm always the one talking).
But not just listen.  I mean really, really listen.

Now let me talk about the title of this blog.

I have had many, many people in my life who have inspired me.
None like Cat.
She was literally...

"The Wind Beneath My Wings"

Everything I did in my life she thought was wonderful.  She was a constant inspiration to me to follow my dream of creating.
She was good.  She was kind.  She was a beautiful soul.

She and "Sollie" (her husband) produced 5 of the finest people I've ever known.
Those 5 produced something like 15 grandchildren for them (give or take a few).
Those 15 grandchildren produced, goodness I don't even know how many great-grandchildren!

All are such fine people.  All are brilliant.  And I'm serious about that.  BRILLIANT.

I am grieving terribly at the loss of this fine woman.

When I visited her in the hospital about a month ago, I realized I had never had a picture with her.
So, I asked her son Don to take a photo.
She lit up and smiled so big for the photo!
I will always treasure this photo.

I love you Mrs. Sollie with every piece of my heart.
I know you are rejoicing with Bec up there in Heaven!

Have a wonderful day y'all!

A Truly Beautiful Video...A must see

This was posted on Facebook the other day.

A sixty something year old woman, who's boyfriend did not want to be seen with her out in public because she was too old.

I have thought about this video so many times since first watching it and decided to post it to my blog.
Why?

Because we as women, and as society dictates, are self-conscious about ourselves as we age.
Many just can't give up that once oh, so youthful, beautiful outside appearance we once had.
The thin body, the beautiful clear eyes, the long healthy hair.
It was ingrained in us as young girls how important our beauty is!
We are told as two year olds.  It is a constant dialect.
Do we talk about how important the other things we do in life are.
That wonderful grade we got on a test?  That amazing piece of scupture we created?
The drawing we drew?

Back to self image.

I'm SO guilty of this...I need to loose 25 lbs, I want to have my eyes done, my neck lifted, and don't get me started on the cellulite on my body.
But, as much as I want an eye lift (and yes I AM doing that)  Against my husband's better wishes.
I want to get back to this video.  I just thought it was sad, but SO brave, and SO unbelievealby true.

Now, let me talk to the men who may be reading....
Get a clue guys.
Women age.  If beauty and youth is your only goal for the woman in your life, you have got a very serious problem.

Women our age need to learn to age graciously, beautifully, find something that you love to do.  Something that is interesting, something that you truly love.  That will find peace in your life!  It is never, ever too late to learn.
You will find your inner beauty.
The outside beauty won't matter as much.
You will find you are so much more than the outside beauty that was pounded in our heads at a young age.

We are ALL Beautiful!  We all have special gifts in this world that we need to explore! Go for it.
And for those jerks who may say "she's too old to be seen with me?" Well, I've got two simple words for you.....
Crude, but true....

have a great day y'all!
